| A Content Management System (CMS)
is a piece of software, which helps to create and
manage websites and to handle all relevant
publication formats for the WWW.
The CMS offers the following
basic functions:
Separation of content,
structure and design:
The separation of these three elements of any
website brings crucial advantages during the
life-cycle of a website and even longer.
Initially, the design is created, extended or
relaunched, without having to extract and reinsert
the content - design and content arrange themselves.
Simple content production, no
programming knowledge required:
The graphical user interface (or the alternative
front-end editing function) allows authors to write
texts, insert images and multimedia data and control
content chronologically, in order to build and
maintain a dynamic website. This is made easier with
the server-side image-creation, e.g. for automatic
generation of navigation elements, graphical image
headings etc.
General advantages of CMS:
Centralised maintenance:
The CMS works with any usable web browser. You can
edit when and where you wish, without restrictions.
For authors without
technical background:
If you can use word processing, you can also create
online content with the CMS.
No HTML knowledge required:
Configurable access
restrictions:
Users can be assigned roles and rights, which
prevents unauthorised alterations of content.
Receipt of design
specification:
Contents and design are stored separately.
Consequently, the entire content of all authors in
one design is given consistently.
Automatic navigation
generation:
Menus are typically generated from database contents.
Hyperlinks are only displayed if they refer to valid
pages.
Storage of contents in
a database:
Central content storage means that contents can be
reused at different locations and adequately
formatted for the relevant medium (web browser,
mobile phone / WAP, PDA, print).
Dynamic contents:
Modular extensions such as forums, surveys, shops,
applications, search functions and news management
are available as ready-to-use modules.
Content "just in time":
The publication of content is precisely controllable
with respect to time. Contents can be prepared in
the background and only viewed in the so-called "hidden
preview" in advance by authorised users. |
