The term "IP address" stands for Internet Protocol address and is a unique and unmistakable number on the internet, in a format which has been clearly defined. Every computer on the internet is assigned a particular IP address, just as a house might be assigned a telephone number. Like with a telephone number, a computer can contact another computer on the internet by means of an IP address. In the technical operation of websites virtual IP addresses can be used as well as dedicated IP addresses. With a virtual IP address, multiple websites can share the same IP address. Virtual IP addresses are suited for web presences without drawbacks. However, in special cases a dedicated IP address is required. Such cases may be:
- Websites with an own SSL certificate
- Websites which accept online credit card payments
- Websites with content unsuitable for minors
- Websites that should be accessible by domain name
as well as by the IP address
- Websites that access external services automatically
and authenticate on the IP address level
RIPE NCC is one of the worldwide 5 Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), which are responsible for the assignment and coordination of internet resources such as IP addresses.
Innter.Net© is a member of RIPE NCC, which is responsible for the assignment and coordination of internet resources in Europe and the Middle East exclusively.
